Putting together a presentation for school can be a little bit stressful, to say the least. Here are a few tips to get you headed in the right direction.
Preparation
More than likely, you have a good set of guidelines from your teacher or professor. Give them a good going over, and start brainstorming and making notes. If you can, arrange to meet with your professor to see if he or she have any additional thoughts as to what you might do with your presentation, and what some good places might be to begin your research.
When it comes to research, whatever you do, don’t let Google do all the work. In fact, it might be a good idea to pretend, at least for a day or two, that the modern search engine doesn’t exist at all, and turn to some old-school methods. For instance, you can make your friendly local librarian’s day by going to the library and having a conversation with the with him or her about your topic, and where you might find some good research material. Or, you could contact an expert in the field and conduct an informational interview. These are the kinds of things that will give your presentation that something extra, and you will learn a lot more, and have a lot more fun in the process.
Putting It Together
Once you have all your notes and research together, you should start to put together an outline and general plan for the flow of the presentation. You will want to make sure there is time for a brief but informative introduction, as well as some sort of conclusion at the end. For all intents and purposes, you are creating a research paper in talking form. After the introduction, start to create your narrative in a way that will keep your audience entertained. Don’t fall into the trap of thinking that you have to start at the chronological beginning of you tale. Some of the best stories start in the middle and work outward and inward from there.
Multi-Media
You should, of course create a PowerPoint presentation to go along with your talk. Don’t go overboard, or rely on your slide show too heavily, however. Keep the number of slides to no more than about 15 for a one-hour presentation. As far as other multi-media, if there are tangible examples of what you are presenting on, bring them and hand them out to pass around.
Your PowerPoint slides should be printed out and bound together along with any other handouts you might have and bind them together in an attractive and easily-read way, such as with spiral coil or plastic-comb binding. These are relatively inexpensive and your school may even have the binding machines you will need, making the process even less expensive.
Practice!
You should make sure that you reserve plenty of time to practice your presentation (including transitions to and from your multi-media) before you give it. The more you practice, the more comfortable you will be while giving your presentation. Enlist the help of friends and family to give you some constructive feedback. Make sure that you leave a little time at the end of your presentation for questions, and dress up, of only a little bit, to give yourself a more professional appearance.

Listening is a crucial skill for professional and personal success. Yet it seems like such a basic skill – we all know how to listen, right? But although this skill is basic in theory, it’s difficult to execute. Yes, everyone can listen, but how many people can listen well?

Communication is a two-way street – there is a sender (the speaker) and there is a receiver (the listener). And if all goes well, the message that is sent is the same message that is received. As the receiver/listener, it is your job to make sure you understand what the sender/speaker is trying to communicate.

Why is listening important? First, it shows respect to the speaker. When was the last time someone listened – really listened – to you? Didn’t it make you feel good, like you had something worth listening to? That’s how you want to make others feel when they speak to you. Business and life would be a lot easier if we showed each other more respect.

Second, if you listen well, you can learn something. If you ask a good question and then open your ears and close your mouth, you’ll be amazed at what people will tell you. This point was driven home by one of my favorite colleagues, Nancy Urell, when she shared a wise saying that she heard: “When you talk, you hear what you already know. When you listen, you learn something new.” (Nancy Urell, Principal, Career Corner Associates, a training and career management firm, www.careercorner.net) What new things could you learn if you stopped to listen?

Here are 5 ways to improve your listening skills:

1. Focus. If you decide that someone is worth listening to, then give the speaker your full attention. Turn away from the computer and set your cell phone to vibrate. We may like to think we can multi-task, but we really can’t do it with tasks, and we certainly can’t do it with people. You can’t read your email or read the newspaper and listen to someone at the same time. Sure, you might hear what they are saying, and you may even catch the meaning of some of it, but you are not really listening.

2. Show that you are listening. Make eye contact, ask relevant questions and avoid distracting behavior like yawning or checking your watch frequently.

3. For a few minutes, let it be all about the other person. Don’t use the time to think about your rebuttal. It’s important to remember that the function of listening is to understand what the other person is saying, not necessarily to agree with it. Yes, you can disagree, but first you have to understand the other’s point of view. And sometimes, just listening and having the other person feel “heard” will be enough to defuse any disagreement.

4. Read between the lines. Don’t just listen to the words – also tune into the non-verbal communications. Watch the other’s body language and become aware of the feelings behind the words. If you’re not sure, ask questions to check that your understanding matches theirs. Usually you have to deal first with the person’s feelings, whether anger, frustration or joy, before you can move on to problem-solving or resolution.

5. Resist the urge to interrupt. Ah, this is a tough one for many of us, me included. Sometimes we’re so agitated by what we’ve heard, or we’re so excited, that we feel we have to cut them off with “but that’s not what happened” or “you think that’s bad, wait till you hear what happened to me!” Interrupting tells the other person that you think your words are more important than theirs, which is not the message you want to send. As with any skill development, practicing helps.

As Stephen Covey reminds us in The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, “seek first to understand, then to be understood.” The next time you’re in a conversation with a colleague, a loved one or even someone you’ve just met, practice active listening. You’ll be amazed at how that simple habit can improve your relationships and give you opportunities to learn.

In my last post, 3 Different Types of Learners, I explained the 3 different broadly accepted types of learners. These are Visual, Auditory and Kinesthetic/Tactile.

In this post I will explain and provide different strategies and exercises for the 3 different groups of learners. Remember though, that most people are usually a combination of different learning styles with one that stands out predominantly.

You will find that in certain circumstances, some learners will need to use different learning strategies. For eg. I am a mixture of all 3 learning styles and learn well from reading written notes (visual), but also learn whilst writing out the notes (kinesthetic).

Visual Learning Strategy – studying tips for visual learners to use

• Outlines – if a learner understands how a certain concepts relates to the section/subject as a whole they will grasp it quicker, and have a deeper understanding of the subject as a whole

• Maps – mind maps, organisational charts, diagrams

• Highlighters

• Lists – bulleted points are easy to read

• Colour code sections of work so that the learner relates that colour to that concept

• Use of videos when possible

• Flashcards

• Visual Mnemonics – pictures to remember concepts or steps of a concept. Good for learning languages as the learner can associate a word to an image

Auditory Learning Strategy – studying tips for auditory learners to use

• Word associations and mnemonics

• Mnemonics are rhymes or songs made up to help the learner remember certain things. You can Google this to find tons of different ideas.

• Word association and acronyms – E.g. to spell BECAUSE “Betty eats cakes and uncles sells eggs”

• You can also summarise points this way

• Eg 3 traits of Hitler

• A G E – Autocratic, German, Enigmatic

• Get the learner to explain what you have gone through back to you in their own words

• Get the learner to repeat facts and figures that they have to learn parrot fashion with their eyes closed to themselves

Kinesthetic/Tactile Learning Strategy – studying tips for kinesthetic learners to use

• Role play

• Get the learner to physically do it themselves – i.e. make their learning tangible

• Take them on a field trip

• Study in short bursts and give them frequent breaks

• Try getting the learner to walk/ tap their foot whilst explaining something back to you or have them play with a yo yo whilst studying. They could also take their notes to gym and read through them whilst on an exercise bike

• This stops their mind from being distracted by wanting to do something else more active. This means that they will be able to concentrate better on studying.

• It provides the stimuli needed to learn

It is essential for learners to have study skills, however it is even more important for them to have study skills relevant to the way they learn. I hope this post helps to get your learner studying smart and not hard!

Please feel free to post comments on other ideas you have for study tips or things that you have found to help you or your child.

So, your child is beginning to get restless and make you restless. He has got more time than is good for him, and you are now considering after school programs – anything that will keep him busy for a few life-saving hours! Most after school activities can be broadly classified into three – recreational, educational and society-oriented. The last bit usually comes in when your child is already a bit grown up and can voice his own interests.

Educational activities aim at furthering the knowledge of your child. His general awareness, his understanding and his memory are targeted and he is given various techniques that will help him improve one or all of these. Programs such as intensive memory training and speed mathematics are educational after school activities. There are academic programs that will go over your child’s homework and class work and help the child gain more in-depth knowledge in the various subjects. Thus academic programs have a definite edge over the fun and games, especially if parents feel that their child has a lot of catching up to do.

Recreational activities include sports and games, fine arts, painting etc. The main thrust here is to have fun. Of course, classes become more competitive as the child climbs up the ladder. Many sport events, competitions, stage performances etc are held to encourage the child.

When we compare the merits of the two kinds of activities, I believe that the recreational programs have more meat. Firstly, children do not enjoy learning unless they themselves feel curious about something. Most academic programs are standardized courses that are not too flexible. They have a general purpose and a well laid out methodology. After a number of hours at school, the child may feel bored. Further study may overwhelm him and make him feel frustrated. Burnout is very much a possibility here.

Recreational programs provide a welcome break from the monotony of learning and studies. The mental challenge and the physical exertion make the child feel a renewed zest and a pleasant sense of fulfillment. Group activity teaches him social skills, discipline and patience. It is a proven fact that children involved in extra curricular activities get better grades than others. Sometimes closing the textbooks and playing a game may be the best way to handle your studies.

Whatever program you choose for your child, regular evaluation is the key to success. You will have to measure the child’s progress. If progress is unsatisfactory, shift your child out of the program. The child should also have the freedom to reject an activity if and when he feels bored with it. Generally, programs that combine the educational with the recreational are best suited especially for younger children. This way, children can have fun while they learn.
